If you are reading this, then I'm sure I don't have to spell out the pain and heartache an ongoing head lice infestation. How it can turn children against parents. My niece had beautiful long thick hair that was all the way to her bottom, her pride and joy. The kind that everyone notices and comments on. But one day she had an itch that would not subside. This wasn't a dandruff itch, this was something else entirely.

Alas, the fateful day had arrived. One quick check and our worst fears were confirmed. She'd contracted head lice, and little did we know, our two year battle had just begun.

Over the next few months, we tried every type of nit shampoo, spending literally hundreds of dollars on different types.

In desperation, my sister cut off all of her beautiful hair and even bleached it. My beautiful niece was distraught. She then had an orange bob. I tried to cheer her by brightly asking if she liked her new style. The answer? A soft... "no."

Still, the evil little nasties kept returning.

It distressed me terribly to hear her cry as yet another product was tried and our mother would spend hours combing through her dried out hair, squashing bugs and removing nits. It would make me well up and have to swallow back a sob every time I saw her having to go through it. She is such a good girl, I tell not a lie when I say this was one of the very few times I have ever seen her cry.

This was not naughtiness, this was real pain.

The worst thing about these products were most only killed the louse and not the eggs. Every time we tried a different type we would have to spend hours removing every single living egg. We spent five hours one night taking turns combing, segmenting, twisting and pulling at her hair and scalp to remove all the nits.

Of course we missed one or two and three days later they hatched. Her nightmare began again as thousands of the blood sucking creatures invaded her scalp, the saliva and faeces of these horrendous creatures causing the irritation that was driving her to distraction.

I wanted to know why these products were not working and how they could keep selling something this useless. Weren't there laws stating that if you bought something, it had to actually DO what it said it would??

I was as mad as hell and I wasn’t going to take it anymore! I wanted to know how to get rid of hair lice once and for all!

So I started to dig deeper. I spent hours trolling the internet for information. I spent hours more in the library. I read about the active ingredients contained in lice-treating formulae (which are usually pesticides).

What I found out shocked me to the core. I ran to my sister with the news.

These chemicals have been proven to be carcinogenic and to cause all sorts of interesting complications.

I learned that head lice were more or less resistant to ALL these chemical compounds anyway. Our children on the other hand are not, so I was understandably concerned about the fact we were putting pesticide-based preparations containing powerful neuro-toxins on my beautiful niece's young scalp.

Unaware of our options however, we had just followed the pharmacist’s and our doctor’s advice blindly.

But as I read further, it only got worse.

Some of the chemical compounds in head lice treatments are not only ineffective, but extremely dangerous!

Many head louse medicines contain dangerous pesticides developed to kill mosquitoes and for the aerial spraying of other pests. These are just SOME of the cocktail of dangerous chemicals used to manufacture head lice and scabies solutions.

Lindane: Applications of lice treating medications containing Lindane have been proven to be extremely dangerous. Lab tests reported cancer causing agents, blood disorders, damage to the liver, kidney, nervous and immune systems and DEATH in animal testing from treatments containing this chemical. This toxic chemical is the working ingredient in over 2 MILLION prescriptions for head lice and scabies!

According to PANNA (Pesticide Action Network North America): "Lindane can cause seizures and damage to the nervous system, and can weaken the immune system. Case-controlled research shows a significant association between brain tumors in children and the use of lindane-containing lice shampoos. The insecticide is also a suspected carcinogen (contains cancer causing agents) and hormone disruptor."

New York followed California in banning the chemical compound Lindane and it is now banned in 52 countries. Despite this damning evidence, parts of the US still allow prescriptions containing Lindane in pharmaceutical compounds!

How much more evidence do we need??

How many other chemicals that we are currently using on our precious children will be proven to cause seizures, neurological problems, leukaemia, asthma, convulsions, organ damage, bone marrow problems (just to name a FEW) and even death as Lindane has??

Malathion (or Maldison as it is know in NZ and Australia): Is a highly toxic derivative of nerve gas which works by disrupting the chemical reactions in the lice's (and our) nervous system. Extremely toxic orally, Malathion is a possible carcinogen, mutagen (Mutates DNA) and endocrine disruptor. In its raw state, malathion is readily absorbed into the skin.

Pyrethroid Pesticides: These are known to be toxic to the Thyroid and Immune System, amongst other concerns. Scientific studies of Sumithrin, Resmethrin and Permethrin also reveal serious safety concerns and are possible carcinogens. German studies link exposure to Permethrin and also Phenothrin with leukaemia, lymphoid cancer and multiple chemical sensitivity. These pesticides are commonly thought to be made from chrysanthemum flowers, which they are not! They are NOT natural. They are SYNTHETIC compounds which are now PROVEN to be dangerous!

Even though the government declared these chemicals safe for use, when enough accumulative damage came to light, extensive testing then eventually proved them wrong! It was not until widespread reports of birth defects and a vast variety of other interesting complications in cities sprayed aerially for pests sparked tests on these chemical compounds. Yet despite this, they are still prescribed for use on our CHILDREN!

Almost every compound brought to us by the highly profitable chemical industry claims to be harmless until we find out the hard way this is NOT so (DDT for example!).

To make things even worse, children's sensitive growing bodies are far less able to process these chemicals, as they have less developed immune systems and their detoxification processes are not yet developed. This makes them far more susceptible and sensitive to the toxic effects of pesticides.

Yet, according to a 1996 study conducted on 300,000 primary schoolchildren at 31 schools spread across the five health authorities of Wales, the researchers concluded that as many as 80% of 316 lice tested were resistant to these very chemicals.

Are we REALLY prepared to put our children in THIS much danger for a shocking, mind boggling 20% success rate?

I needed to hear what
other mothers had to say about this.

I told my sister I was going to be picking my niece up from school for the next two weeks (she readily agreed).
